Marvel Legends 15 Out Now!

I just read over on action-figure.com that Marvel Legends series 15, the MODOK wave, is hitting Wal-Marts in the US now. It seems a reader in Washington state wrote in to let them know he found them. They had reported earlier that auctions from there had begun to show up on eBay.

This series has Wasp, Spider Woman, Beta Ray Bill, Moon Knight, Captain Marvel and Thor Buster Iron man. The build a figure is MODOK. I just finished finding wave 14 last week so this is unexpected these are hitting so close together. But it's sure to make collectors happy!

Superhero Sightings Becomes Hero Hunt!

I started this blog called Superhero Sightings in September 2005. Since then, it has grown to almost 200 posts. I have really enjoyed doing it, so I have decided to move it to it's own domain and give it a new name and look. I have also expanded the focus to include collectibles and entertainment news outside the superhero and comic book world. My friend Rod will also be posting, so you will see a wider range of topics being covered there.

Hopefully, Hero Hunt will also have better functionality because I am now using Wordpress. You will now see all posts organized by categories so hopefully they will be easier to find. I was able to port all of the content from Superhero Sightings, so everything that was here will be there as well. Marvel Legends 13 Found in the US!

On the message boards over at AFTimes.com, 2 different readers reported finding Marvel Legends 13 in the US. One reader is in Chicago and one is in California. Both of them were found at Toys R Us. It looks like TRU is the place to be finding these now. The 13th series of Marvel Legends is the Bring on the Bad Guys wave with all villians. The six figures are Green Goblin, Blackheart, Pyro, Lady Deathstrike, Abomination and Loki. The build a figure is Onslaught.

Missing Marvel Issues?

I'm not sure if anyone paid attention to this or not besides me, but I noticed that New Avengers #19 and Squadron Supreme #3 were listed on Diamond's shipping list for last Wednesday. When Wednesday came, those 2 issues did not show up.

I asked my comic book guy what happened to them. He said he had no idea. I tried to find out myself to no avail. Well, I checked tonight, and those 2 issues have been added to this weeks shipping list. Looks like they were a week late for some reason. I was dissappointed they were late, but I was glad to find out they were shipping. You can see Diamond's weekly shipping lists every week here on their web site.

Old West Ghost Rider Maquette from Sideshow

Sideshow recently announced one of their newest collectible statues in the Marvel movie line, the Old West Ghost Rider Maquette. From Sideshow's web site:

Sideshow Collectibles and Marvel are proud to present the West Rider Maquette, based on designs from the upcoming major motion picture, Ghost Rider. Under the supervision of Creative Director Tom Gilliland, the Sideshow creative team studied the conceptual artwork created from the film, and together with sculptor Ray Villafane, translated the conceptual designs into a fully realized sculptural artwork. The prototype was finished with Tom's paintwork, detailing and enhancing the sculpted cowboy clothing, bone, and fire.

The West Rider Maquette is sculpted in approximately 1:5 scale and stands roughly 17 inches tall. Each piece is hand cast and hand painted to exacting standards. West Rider is fully outfitted in cowboy gear, much of which has been consumed by flames, with embers still glowing. The figure is complete with a realistic rope, and the ever-'burning' flames are cast in a translucent material designed to enhance ambient light. Each piece will be packed in a durable molded foam interior for safe shipment, and packaged inside a beautiful full color box.

Marvel Civil War #1 Review

Am I the only person who is not that thrilled with the first issue of Civil War? I actually enjoyed the second half of the story more, but several things in the first part of the book annoyed me. [SPOILER ALERT] In this review, I am going to talk about certain parts of the story line. If you haven't read it yet and don't want to know what happens, then don't read any further. I think you pretty much get the gist that I am less than thrilled from the above anyway. Moving on...

Okay so, in the first part of the story, a villian called Nitro explodes taking out a school. This causes outrage against superheroes across America. After the explosion, several former Avengers show up in costume to clean up and discuss the issues at hand. This is my first problem. The Avengers were disbanded and then a new group of Avengers were formed. Why are all the old Avengers showing up now all of a sudden? I guess I can buy that this recent tragedy brought them together, but it was also tragedy that made them all leave.

Next, is the outrage of the American citizens. The whole thing feels contrived to me. On the east coast, where this is all taking place, most Americans are liberal, peace-niks. It is middle America, where most conservative Americans reside, that I would believe to be more upset about something like this. Instead, we are led to believe that a bunch of club-goers beat the crap out of Johnny Storm and call him a 'baby killer' because he is a superhero? These people would probably be mostly college students. When has this ever happened? I am not buying it.

Immediately after that, we see the heroes all together discussing the current events. In the last 3 issues of Amazing Spider-man, Tony Stark travels to Washington to convince the Senate not to enact a superhero registration act. Now we find out he is in favor of it. What is going on here? I find this again hard to believe.

The second part is where it gets good. Now we see Captain America taking on Shield after they try to force him to arrest superheroes that defy the government. To me, this was totally believable, and the ensuing action sequence is great. This redeemed the story for me.

Finally, I won't spoil the last page, but if you read it, you will know what I am referring to. This to me is only more confusing, and it seems like something fishy is going on here.

Initially, I wasn't going to buy this book, but once I found out Mark Millar was writing it, I broke down and signed up. There are several things that annoy me but for now I am going to read it all the way through. I don't plan on buying any of the other 20 tie-ins though, except for Spider-man, Wolverine and New Avengers, which I normally read anyway.

If you are thinking about picking up Civil War, you probably should. Even with all the problems, the important events taking place in this storyline will have huge effects in the Marvel universe. Therefore, I think it is too important to pass up.

Marvel Legends Sentry Variant Found

So now there is another Sentry variant to look out for. Some people have reported finding a Sentry paint variant, where the yellow and blue of the Sentry's outfit appear much brighter. The paint variant is showing up for both the regular Sentry and the long haired, bearded chase version. A friend of mine actually found both versions of this new variant for me. Wal-Mart Exclusive Marvel Legends Series Final Update

Here is the final update for the Marvel Legends Wal-Mart exclusive wave. They are officially out now! A friend of mine found them today at a Wal-Mart in Knoxville, Tennessee. They were also found in Oak Ridge, TN yesterday. The official word is that they wouldn't be out until May. I heard specifically the first or second week. My guess they will be out in full everywhere by then.

Also showing up at the same time as the Wal-Mart exclusive wave, are the Marvel Legends Face Off 2 packs and the new boxsets. My friend found those at Wal-Mart with the exclusives. I'm not sure if these are exclusives or not, although we were told that these wouldn't be showing up until August. One important piece of information is the variants of the 2 packs are evenly distributed in the cases. This means that you should find as many variants in the cases as regular versions.

Superhero Times has updated their Wal-Mart Marvel Legends page with this piece of information from Toy Biz.

I wanted to clarify an oversight on the press release that was sent last week. Please note that you must collect 10 figures to build Giant Man (one of these figures is a variant). The variants in this assortment will not be as hard to come by as other Marvel Legends assortments.

Another Update for the Wal-Mart Marvel Legends

All the major toy news outlets are reporting that Wal-Mart and Toy Biz have officially announced the Marvel Legends Wal-Mart exclusive wave today. The bad news is that according to the reports, these won't hit stores until May.

I have talked to someone who works in the toy department at my local Wal-Mart, and he had not seen or heard anything about these yet, as of this morning. So, I guess earlier reports have been proven to be rumors. If these are in the back room of some stores, they could be released early though, as some employees ignore street dates.

Marvel Legends Wal-Mart Exclusive Series Update!

At the Fwooshnet Forums, someone posted that a Wal-Mart employee told him that there are pallets of Marvel Legends in the stock room of their store. This pallet has a release date of 4-16-06. This is supposedly cases of the Marvel Legends Wal-Mart exclusive wave. The person who posted this lives in Chicago. You can view the thread here.

Another reader over at the TNI Forums posted that he called his local Wal-Mart about this, and the person he talked to said that some stores have recieved them and others have not. This guy reportedly said they should be out by months end. This reader lives in New York. You can view the thread here.

This sounds pretty credible to me. This means that they could be out as early as next weekend. One thing to note is that April 16th is a Sunday. Your local Wal-Mart may or may not be open on Easter Sunday.

Store Reports: Marvel Toys

The new series of Spider-man action figures are showing up at Wal-Marts all over the country. They hit the local stores here this weekend. This series includes Hobgoblin (brand new sculpt), Spider Hulk, Hydro man and Sandman. From the reports that I have seen, Hydro man and Sandman are not showing up in the same cases at the same time. I have not seen any pictures of Sandman, so I am not sure if it is a repaint or a new sculpt.

Also, the new Sentinel, which is part of the X-Men line, is out at Toys R Us. This is a repaint or reissue of a toy that was released in a previous X-Men line years ago.

Also, I have learned of an update for the Marvel Legends Wal-Mart exclusive wave. Stay tuned!

DC Action Figure News from Mattel

Mattel DC News from Boy Wonder is a forum post over at Action Figure Insider featuring a newsletter from the DC Product Manager at Mattel. The newsletter discusses products coming out this year as well as their plans for 2007. Here are some of the main points.

They are doing a pre-school line through Fisher Price similar to Marvel's, called DC Superfriends.
The DC Superheroes line is limited to Batman and Superman, so right now each wave will alternate between those 2 lines. For 2006, they will have 4 waves, 2 Batman and 2 Superman. There was a third Batman line planned, but it is pushed back to 2007.
Wave 3 of DC Superheroes is a Batman wave and will have dioramas.
In 2007, the DC Superheroes will have Build a Figures similar to Marvel Legends.
Wave 2 of DC Superheroes are shipping to stores now so they should be showing up any day.
2 more variant figures, Superman and Supergirl, for wave 2 of DC Superheroes will be released in June.
They are having problems with the DC Superheroes line, which is delaying the line considerably.
For 2007, they are planning for the first wave to be Superman.

It looks like they are copying the Marvel Legends series step by step, with dioramas, build a figures and variants. This could be good, or it could be bad.

The production problems they are having could hurt them. I think there is a big collector interest in the DC Superheroes line which could die down if Mattel fails to deliver. They really dropped the ball in the past with the Batman comic line and Masters of the Universe, so all we can do is wait and see.

Superman Returns Toys is a web site from Mattel designed to showcase their new line of Superman toys based on the upcoming summer movie, Superman Returns. While this movie is sure to be a hit, it remains to be seen if the toys will be very exciting. The Batman toys weren't really a hit with collectors, but I don't know how they fared with the children. With so many variations of Batman, you wonder.

The site doesn't really feature action figures, but it does showcase the Punch 'n Crush Gloves, Inflato-suit, Ultimate Powers Superman and remote controlled flying Superman. The action figures line is already hitting some stores and lame Superman variations abound. There is a superposeable Superman figure and a 13" Superman figure, similar to the surprisingly cool Batman that was released. These two figures show some promise but are scheduled to show up later.

Fantastic Four Classics Series 2

Fantastic Four Classics Series 2 over at action-figure.com has info and pics on the next wave of Fantastic Four figures from Marvel toys. They report that these figures should be hitting any day now. The assortment consists of:

Twist 'n Slam Thing
Transforming Johnny Storm
Kang
Invisible Woman
Dragon Man

These are supposed to be the Ultimate versions of these characters, except the 2 villians Kang and Dragon Man. I am impressed with these this time around, as the first series left much to be desired. I may pick up more than the 2 villians, but the villians are very likely to be hard to find anyway.

There are lots of pictures, and you can see how they started with one thing and ended up with something very different. The finished version looks fantastic.

X-Men Series 2 Hits Walmart at Action-Figure.com reports that readers are finding X-men series 2 at Wal-Mart stores on the West Coast. This series includes:

Of the readers that are finding them, no one has reported finding the Phoenix. So, it is believed that she is not showing up in the initial assortments. It is possible that she will still show up with later shipments. This happens from time to time with Marvel toys.

I happen to be very excited about this line. One reason is that with the first wave you will be able to create almost half of the line up of the New Avengers. The second is the price. You just can't beat what you are getting for $14.99.

Cool 'Civil War' Trailer up on Marvel.com

I was initially going to pass on Marvel's newest blockbuster summer time comic event, Civil War. These kinds of things are growing old with me. Then I learned that Mark Millar was writing it. End of discussion. Mark Millar is one of those writers where I have to read what he writes no matter what it is. So, Marvel got me again. Anyway, Marvel has created a 'trailer' for this event. Hasbro and Marvel Toys At Ny Comic Con

Hasbro Picks The Mind's Of Collectors About Marvel Toys At NY Comic Con from Comic News International reports that:

"Hasbro representatives were on hand this weekend at the New York Comic convention distributing detailed surveys for patrons to to fill out. The 5-page survey had questions asking what you like/dislike about the current Marvel-based products, how much you collect, what other toylines you like, etc. etc. It also asked about your favorite Marvel titles and charcaters and what figures you want to see made."

Looks like Hasbro is very concerned about what fans want to see from them. This is looking good for fans and collectors. I should note that anything Hasbro starts now will not be seen on the shelves for a while due to the fact that it takes more than a year to produce a toy line.

Hasbro does not actually take over the line until 2007, so it could be the middle or end of the year before we see any results of this input. However, Hasbro is probably making plans on how they want to release already developed stuff they may receive from ToyBiz and will probably use collector input for these things.

FYI - the article does not have this information but Superhero Sightings does. Here are some things you may not know about the upcoming Marvel Legends.

Onslaught, the build a figure for wave 13, is only 8" tall compared to 16" and 18" previous build a figures.
Also, the 12" Icon figures will retail for $14.99 and so will the Face Off 2 packs. That is cheap for 12" figures that are articulated and detailed as these are.

Toy Biz Marvel News in 2006 from Toy Fair

Toy Biz released information and revealed toys from 3 new lines in 2006 in addition to news on Marvel Legends and what will happen when Hasbro takes over in 2007 at the New York Toy Fair going on right now.

New for 2006 will be Marvel Legends Icons, a 12" line, Fantastic Four animated from a new animated show this year and Marvel Legends Master Works. Toy Biz also showed off several all new Marvel Legends including the new 2 packs, the House of M boxset, series 13, series 14 (no X-Babies) and the Wal-Mart exclusive wave. Here's the report coming out of Toy Fair on the future of Marvel toys in 2007 from Toy News International.

Hasbro is taking over all in 2007: Production, design, the control of where the line goes. But not to worry TB is throwing a ton of stuff this year to keep us broke for awhile. Jesse hinted that ML would continue once Hasbro takes over and that some actual X3 based fugues would be released in 07 thru ML. I'm sure that can change between now and then but that's thw word for now. We got lots of pics coming so stay tuned.

An Ultimate Avengers Clip

An Ultimate Avengers Clip on Newsarama.com has a link to a about a minute and a half preview of the new Ultimate Avengers movie. The movie is not due to be out in stores for 2 more weeks.

I watched the clip, and the animation is pretty good. It also seems to follow the origin of the Ulitmates pretty well. I will probably get the video once it comes out. I have to say it looks pretty credible although they may censor it more for the younger crowd.

Marvel Legends 13 in Toy Fare #104!

The new Toy Fare came this weekend. I was suprised because it usually comes late. I was also suprised to find lots of new information on Marvel toys. Inside it has pics of new Fantastic Four classics, Dragon Man, Kang, Sue Storm and another Thing. Spider-man classics has Hobgoblin, Hydro Man and Spider Hulk. It also has pics of Marvel Legends 13 and a Q and A with Jesse Falcon. Here are the details, but I cannot post scans due to legal reasons.

Fantastic Four: It doesn't say how big Dragon Man is. It says the figures are in the 6" scale. They're not together so you can't compare. There is also Transforming Johnny Storm with attachable flame parts. Invisible Woman, Johnny Storm, Kang and Dragon Man look super-srticulated. Thing does not. It says that all the FF designs are from the Ultimate Universe except for the villians which are old school. Release date says May.

Spider-man series 17: Hydro-man has an interchangeable lower half. One is a water base and I assume the other is a pair of legs. It doesn't show it. Spider-Hulk design is from Web of Spider-man #70. Hobgoblin is definitely classic style and super-articulated. He has a pumpkin bomb in his hand and he is riding the glider. The glider looks new and is sculpted with clouds underneath it. Release date says April.

Marvel Legends 13: Pics of the Goblin variant are out there. It looks the same but with the Goblin head instead of the Norman Osborn head. It looks like the new Goblin and Hobgoblin are using the same body type but the gliders are different. Lady Deathstrike looks like crap. Abomination looks super-cool and is definitely a new sculpt. Every figure comes with a piece of Onslaught. All I can say is it looks the same as the pictures that were posted elsewhere from the UK Toy Fair.

Jesse's interview: Jesse says in the interview the Onslaught is the crab monster version. Not the Magneto looking one.

He says the vs. cards are included plus a cardboard diorama insert will be included with brand new character specfic artwork. Abomination has a destroyed Gamma lab. Pyro has a giant flame monster. Lady Deathstrike has Spiral's lab.

Jesse says they will do they figures that were supposed to be pack in villians at some point but they don't know how. And that it didn't make sense to buy a bunch of Loki figures to get a bunch of Hydra agents. Boxset anyone?

He says all of the New Avengers are being done at some point in '06. I don't believe Ronin has been announced yet. Did he forget about him or is there something else in store?

Jesse says they will definitely do the new Spider-man costume in Marvel Legends. I think any plans after this year are in question until we know more of what Hasrbo has planned.

He says the Fantastic Four line will have 2 lines and then be based on the new animated series that is coming out. The last thing he says is,

"There is a line that we are going to be showing at Toy Fair. It shall not be named. When the retailers came in, we changed from doing one assortment to doing three assortments. So its going to be big. I'm drooling."

There is an article in there about Hasbro taking over the Marvel license but it doesn't say anything new. It basically just breaks down what we already know from the press releases.

Marvel Legends 13 & 14 at Toy Fair!

The UK Toy Fair happened this week. Toy Biz unveiled pictures, not actual prodcut, of Marvel Legends series 13 and 14 at the show. The people that were allowed in could not take photographs but they could report on what they saw.

Some pictures showed up online however of what Toy Biz was showing off. These were most likely taken when Toy Biz was not looking. Anyway, this has prompted a response from Toy Biz as posted on toymania.com. Not sure if this is from Toy Biz or not, but here it is.

The recent images of Marvel Legends assortments 13 & 14 that emerged from UK Toy Fair are inaccurate. Models of the real Marvel Legends assortments will be on display next week during NY Toy Fair. We have always encouraged reporters to verify news through our home office for accuracy. Unfortunately, many people choose timing over accuracy.

So, Toy Biz is obviously not happy that these pictures are online. But they are confirming that they will be revealing actual prototypes of Marvel Legends 13 and 14 next week in New York. There you have it.

Marvel Legends 12 Case Pack Changes

I read on one of the forums tonight that at the Toys R Us stores in California, cases of Marvel Legends 12 have the purple X-23 version instead of black costume version and the Maestro figure comes with the Apocalypse arm cable that was missing from earlier shipments.

There has always been some dispute over which is the variant of the X-23 figure. Earlier shipments outside the US had the purple costume version, and shipments to the US had the black costume version. The press photo that Toy Biz released showed the black costume version, and Toy Biz did not officially announce that this was a variant. I recently ordered the purple version online, so I hope I do not find the purple one in the store. I should get it way before they show up around here though, hopefully by the end of the week.

UK Toy Fair News: Marvel Legends

UK TOYFAIR: What's Happening With Marvel Legends? at action-figure.com reports Marvel news from the UK Toy Fair that is going on right now. I was not aware the UK Toy Fair would be this week, but I think I remember that it is normally held around this time every year.

On to Marvel Legends news! The representatives from that site were allowed in but were not allowed to take pictures. Here are some of the things they saw, which you can read in full by visiting the link above.

Apparently, once Hasbro has the line, they will be doing Marvel Mr Potato Heads similar to the Darth Tater from Star Wars.
They showed Marvel Legends Icons 12" figures, Ultimate Captain America, Iron Man, Thor and Green Phoenix.
They had 2 of the Marvel Legends Face Off Twin Packs on display. Kingpin vs. Daredevil has a Kingpin in a black suit and a Daredevil with his hood pulled back to show him wearing his glasses. The other set was Hulk vs Leader.
They had Marvel Legends 13, and the build-a-figure is Onslaught.
They had Marvel Legends 14, and the author couldn't recall the name of the build-a-figure. There is also X-babies with this wave as an extra pack-in with each figure. These were described as a 1" non articulated piece.
They also had the new X-Men line as well as the Spider-man line.
From the Spider-man line, they showed Hydro-Man, Shocker, Mad Jack and a stealth Venom.

My thoughts on this, the Daredevil 2 pack he describes is probably the variant version. I am not very excited about X-babies, but I am excited about the 12" figures and the Onslaught build-a-figure. I can't wait until Toy Fair where we can see actual pictures!

Marvel X-Men Action Figure News

This news coming from action-figure.com, Astonishing X-men Beast Variant shows pictures of a Beast variant with a sculpt from the Astonishing X-Men comic. I actually prefer this version over the regular one. I hope it is easy to find.

Magneto Becomes The Ultimate is a review of the new Magneto figure also from this line. Both figures are from the second series of the X-Men line, which are not showing up in the US yet.

Kingpin Mini-bust Coming Soon!

I have been trying to track down the Kingpin mini-bust by Bowen. I haven't collected mini-busts before. But, when I saw the Spider-Woman mini-bust by Bowen, I had to have it. And I got it for Christmas.

I said the same thing when I saw the Bowen Kingpin bust. I saw somewhere that it would be out in January 2006. I told my local comic book store owner I wanted one. But, here it is almost the end of January and no Kingpin.

I starting looking up every site I could find that sells these, and they all say that it is shipping this month. I saw one site that said it would ship February 22nd. This sounded about right to me being that January is almost over. I even asked my comic book guy today about it, and he told me he heard the middle of February as well.

Well, last night I went straight to the source and e-mailed the manufacturer. Here is the response I got.

In response to your questions; Unlike comics, our statues can arrive to comic shops any day of the week, not just Wednesday. Kingpin will actually start shipping on Monday 1/30.

There you have it. If you are like me and wondering where this bust is, it ships Monday according to Bowen.

Coming Soon: Toy Fair 2006!

The time is almost upon us. Yes friends, the annual New York Toy Fair will be here in less than a month. You can find out all the details here at Superhero Sightings. Once the coverage starts, I will post as much superhero toy releated news as I can find. I myself will not be attending but will be patrolling all the major sites and forums as usual.

What to Expect

Toy companies use this time to make major announcements for the year ahead for their respective toy lines. So for the next couple of weeks, don't expect much toy related news to be released. Most of the toy companies will be saving it for this event. Expect big news from all the major toy companies on the big lines for 2006, Superman Returns, X-Men 3, DC Superheroes, Fantastic Four, as well as the collectors favorite, Marvel Legends, and others.

This event is not open to the public, but only to members of the press. You can still get in though. If you know someone who has a publishing outlet, for example, a web site that may feature toys among other things, you can get a press pass to get in. But, to talk to any toy reps you usually have to set up an appointment. You also may have to have reservations to get into some areas. Some companies only will allow a certain number of people from any given source per day.

The Details

The Toy Fair is in New York at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center from Sunday, February 12th through Wednesday the 15th. Here is the link to the site where you can find out more information about the 2006 New York Toy Fair.

Mattel is doing these toys so the most recent thing to compare what these figures will be like is the Batman Begins line. This worries me a little bit. I did not like any of the 6" scale Batman figures from the movie line. The sculpting was good but they had way too many Batman variations, and the articulation was poor. Also they were more like a 5" line than 6". I don't own any of the smalle scale figures, but I do own the 13" figure from Mattel. I happen to like that one a lot so I am looking forward to a 13" scale Superman figure from Mattel.

I think if they made them more like the new DC Superhero line that is out, they could be a lot better. But they are about to do a Superman series in that line so that wouldn't make much sense. If the figures do have better articulation, I think that would improve them a lot, but as you can see from the list above, they already have multiple Superman variations planned.

According to ToyWiz, these are planned to ship in March, but I bet we will see prototypes at Toy Fair next month, if not before then.

Updated: Hasbro to Produce Marvel Toys in '07

Rumors began this weekend out of the Hong Kong toy show that the Marvel toy license is expiring and that Hasbro was picking up the license. It has been confirmed that the license does expire this year, but many fans were concerned over the idea that Hasbro might produce Marvel figures. There was also a lot of confusion surrounding this as the current producer of Marvel Toys, Toy Biz, is owned by Marvel.

Well, the confusion still exists, but it is official. In Hasbro Picks up the Marvel License over st Super Hero Times, Hasbro announced that they will produce Marvel toys beginning in 2007. In addition to this, Marvel Press Statement on the Hasbro Deal is a Marvel press release at Action-Figure.com detailing how Marvel has ended its distribution deal with Toy Biz Worldwide a year early effective at the end of 2005. Marvel will produce everything in house until 2007 when Hasbro takes over the license.

What does this all mean? What Does the Hasbro / Marvel Deal Mean? by Adrian at Action-Figure.com is a long article detailing the whole saga including the relationship between Toy Biz, Marvel and Toy Biz Worldwide.

Here is what I think is going to happen. I think that Hasbro will be developing, producing and distributing all of the Marvel toys beginning in 2007, based on what I read. I think that Marvel is getting out of the toy business, and this is the way to do it. What does this mean for Toy Biz? I think Toy Biz will be dissolved and absorbed into Hasbro or Marvel. They do have the licenses for addtional toy lines. I think those will be absorbed as well. I don't see anyway for Toy Biz to continue without the Marvel line.

What will happen to Marvel Legends and similar lines? I don't think they will continue, at least not like they are now. I don't see how Hasbro can continue to produce them in the same fashion as they are now without changing them. Now, I know relatively little about the toy business. I hope Hasbro proves me wrong, and they do an even better job than Toy Biz. I hope we find out more at Toy Fair next month.

Hasbro to Distribute Marvel Toys in 2007?

This is a rumor, as I cannot confirm anything official right now, but it has been reported on several toy collecting message boards that Hasbro will have the rights to distribute Marvel figures in 2007. This news is reportedly coming out of the Hong Kong Toy Fair which is going on right now.

Apparently under the current relationship, Toy Biz, the company that produces Marvel toys, is owned by Marvel. However, the license to distribute the toys is owned by a company called Toy Biz Worldwide which is a separate company from Toy Biz and Marvel. It has been confirmed that the distribution license will end in 2006. So the news that Hasbro will be getting the license in 2007 makes sense.

There is a lot of confusion over this among fans. I will continue to report on this as the story develops. But if this is true, I think it will be a good thing as long as it is Toy Biz who designs and develops the figures. It seems to me since Hasbro is a much larger company than Toy Biz Worldwide, it would be of benefit to Toy Biz and Marvel to have Hasbro distibute the figures.

Sideshow Collectibles Marvel News

The Sideshow e-newsletter comes out tomorrow but subscribers get a preview a day early. They actually post it online a day early and members can login to their account and read the newsletter. I didn't actually know this was a feature so this was the first time I had seen it. Anyway onto the news...

Sideshow is really delving into the Marvel license in 2006. They announced the X3 movie license recently and have 2 new collectibles up for pre-order, the X3 Beast Maquette and the X3 Juggernaut Maquette.

I have a few comments about these, first off the Beast figure is based on initial designs for the movie not the final version. That said, look at his unit! Not sure what to make of that, but it kind of reminds me of the Beast version of the famous David statue. Second, Juggernaut really looks like Ram-Man from Masters of the Universe.

I saved the best for last. Sideshow is doing another diorama based on the comic designs, The Incredible Hulk vs. Spider-Man Diorama. This blew me away, and I have only seen the previews. 2006 looks to be a promising year for Marvel and Sideshow.

Creative Team Announced for New Wolverine Series

Way, Dillon Named As Wolverine: Origins Team at Newsarama announces that Marvel has confirmed that Daniel Way and Steve Dillon will be the creative team on the new series, and Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada will be the series cover artist. According to the story, Marvel did confirm that, beginning in June, Wolverine will not be a part of the two X-Men teams (X-Men and Uncanny, though he will be appearing in Astonishing).

The new series was only announced yesterday, and I assumed it would be awhile before we found out who the creative team was. That said, I am fine with Way writing it. He is writing the current series, and I like what I have read of his. Dillon would not be my choice for the artist though. I think that Dillon, like a lot of artists, draws people the same. I also do not like the way he tends to draw them. Joey Q is doing the covers though, and it is Wolverine so I will probably buy it. I loved the first "Origin" series and from what I can tell Way seems to know what he is doing.

Marvel Legends Fight Scenes Update!

You can still vote for the Marvel Legends Fight Scene over at Marvel.com. It is now in week 4, and there are 2 finalists left, Spider-man vs. Venom or Ultimates vs. Hulk. The winning scenes will be used in all new Marvel Legends product line that has not been announced yet.

I want to know who votes on these things. I admit, Ultimates vs. Hulk would be cool, but these two were not in any of my votes. I'm guessing that since you can vote once per day someone is going on there everyday and voting for these choices.

New Wolverine Series from Marvel

In Joe Fridays #31 over at Newsarama, Marvel Editor-in-Chief, Joe Quesada, hinted that there was a new Wolverine "origin" series in the works.

Today Marvel officially announced, Wolverine: Origins, a new series that will run alongside the current Wolverine series. According to Marvel, this series picks up where the first origin series left off and that major questions will be answered. Apparently, the storyline will not follow any particular order. The series is stated to be released in April.

Marvel Legends series 11 action figures by Michael Crawford is a detailed review with pictures of Marvel Legends series 12.

Michael has another review over at Movie Poop Shoot of the 18" Apocalypse build a figure for Marvel Legends series 12.

I have had series 12 and the Apocalypse for almost a month now, and I have to say I pretty much agree with Michael here. I bought the whole series for the included figure so I would not have bought most of these alone. That said, I really like the Wolverine, Iron Fist and the variant Bishop. The rest are good but not essential to me.

The Apocalypse really delivers as well. I have decided I am going to refrain from buying a whole series to get the build a figure though. If I can't piece it together another way, then I don't need it.

Michael also has a guest review up of the Marvel Legends series 10 Angel.

Going back a few days, Michael also reviewed the new DC Superhero figures. The Batman was the only one I was really excited about from the first seris. I saw this figure in person recently, and it really looks cool. I passed on it for now though for 2 reasons, one, it was $10 at Target, and two, the pins in the knee joint are blue! Check the pictures to see what I am talking about. I guess you can paint over them but to me it throws the whole figure off.

Ultimate Avengers

Ultimate Avengers is the official site for the upcoming DVD release coming February 21. You can view the trailer but a lot of the other features are not currently available. You can still download wallpapers and use the forums though. It also looks like you will be able to pre-order the movie from the site.

Edit: It also looks like the movie will be rated PG-13. I think a lot of people will not expect that and may overlook it. Granted the last Spider-man was PG-13 and so was the most recent Batman movie. But this is a cartoon which most people will assume is okay for kids to watch.

New 6' X-Men Figures

New 6' X-Men Figures at Toy News International has news and images of these X-Men figures. From what I can gather, this is a new line of X-Men figures from Toy Biz for 2006 and is meant to replace the X3 movie figure line.

According to this thread over at TNI, the movie production was delayed so Toy Biz decided to produce a line of figures that would combine the characters in the movie with the comic style. The line will probably continue once the movie is over and even is scheduled to contain characters that are not in the movie.

Some of the figures from the first series are simply repaints from the Marvel Legends and now defunct X-Men classics lines. So expect a lot of reuse is what I am saying. The new X-Men line is currently hitting retail shelves at Wal-Mart, I believe.

Update: Missing Apocalypse Arm Tube

Earlier this month I posted about the Marvel Legends series 12 build a figure missing a part. The missing part is a plastic tube that was supposed to come with the build a figure piece that was packaged with the Maestro Hulk figure. This piece was missing from every figure that Toy Biz shipped. When collectors started complaining, Toy Biz realized the mistake and advised people to contact them to receive your replacement part. Well, I got mine today! This was much faster than expected considering the time estimates given out by Toy Biz initially, which was 2 weeks to get the part in and 4 to 6 weeks to ship. My Apocalypse is finally complete.

Amazing Spider-Man To Run In Sunday Papers on Newsarama.com reports that Marvel Comic's original "Amazing Spider-Man" series will be distributed in Sunday papers beginning early next Fall. News America Marketing, a division of News Corporation (NYSE: NWSA), today announced an agreement with Marvel Entertainment, Inc. through which it has obtained the rights to publish collectible editions of Marvel Comic's original "Amazing Spider-Man" series. The re-issue of the series will start with the original issue #1, first published in 1963. The Spider-Man comic book will have a circulation of 10 million across major metro markets throughout the U.S. Each original book will be split in two, published on consecutive weeks, with 46 publication dates a year. News America’s first publication of Marvel’s original “Amazing Spider-Man” will be in late summer 2006, during the height of the back-to-school time period.

Toy News International reports that Mattel is producing a Hal Jordan figure for the JLU line that will only be released to employees. Reportedly there are only going to be 100 produced and they are all going to be signed by the sculptor. There is a lot of controversy behind this because this is a new and popular character that will not be available to the public. The new Ghost Rider web site is up and it freakin' rocks. A 10-second flash clip shows Nicolas Cage and his CGI alter ego, with Cage's voiceover. The film was recently pushed back to Feb. 16, 2007. This is the second time Marvel has released a film directed by Mark Steven Johnson on Valentine's Day weekend. The first film was Darevevil.

Superhero Times - New 6" DC Superheroes

Posted on Superhero Times, the new 6" DC Superheroes have been found in stores. These are reportedly being found at Wal-Mart first. They come with a comic but no base. I have heard they are $9. They are also supposed to be superposeable.

My opinion of these figures is they will not do well, at least not as well as Marvel Legends have done. Although Marvel Legends did not take off for a while either. I do not think Mattel can handle this line though, and most of that is due to the mismanagement of the recent Batman line and the Masters of the Universe Line. They do seem to be succeeding with the JLU line so you can give them some credit.

Here is what I think will happen. Although there are 3 villians in the first wave, Batman will be heavily packed in the case. We'll be lucky if the villians are 2 per case. This is a smart move though because most kids will want Batman, leaving collectors to snatch up the 1 or 2 per case villians. This "rare" factor is probably intended to drive collectors and scalpers to the line. It may work for Mattel if they continue to do one good version of the main characters per wave. However, I think they will srew it up in light of their track record. I also don't think DC has enough interesting supporting characters to support the line as long as Marvel Legends has. They don't have a build a figure either. Overall, I think due to the higher cost, no bases, limited characters and tendency to mismanage toy lines by Mattel, the line may survive for a while but ultimately go the way of previous Mattel lines with potential.

This set is packaged in a 4 color window box with a full-size 48-page comic book compiling material from ACTION COMICS #1, SUPERMAN (Second Series) #7, and AMAZING WORLD OF SUPERMAN. Don't get too excited though, they are all rehashed figures. The Jim Lee Superman is from the Hush line and the John Byrne Superman is from the Alex Ross Justice League line. The Robot Superman is from the Superman/Batman Public Enemies line. These are all planned to be released next August.

My personal opinion is that DC Direct is in trouble so it remains to be seen if they will or not. Thanks to Toy News International for the info.

Get a first look on Comic News International at Power Girl, OMAC and Alex Luthor from Infinite Crisis series 1, which according to last's months Toy Fare will be released in August 2006. In addition to these figures, the lineup is supposed to include Mongul and Earth-Prime Superboy. According to Toy Fare, the Alex Luthor figure sports a removable 'fro so he can switch between his looks for Crisis on Infinite Earths and Infinite Crisis.

Marvel.com has an X3 feature up on their site now. The release date is currently set as May 26, 2006. You can see pics of characters that will appear in the movie, including Beast, Angel, and and the newly resurfaced Jean Grey. That's right Jean Grey! Although I'm guessing no one really thought she was dead, my bet is that she will return as Phoenix.

According to Comics Continuum:

The first trailer for the third X-Men movie had more than 1 miilion online views in the first 24 hours after it was posted online, according to 20th Century Fox.

In other X3 news:

* Dania Ramirez is playing Callisto. She is perhaps best known as Caridad from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Her previous credits also include Fat Albert and She Hate Me.

In the film, Callisto sides with Magneto's Brotherhood.

* Cerebro will not be featured in the third film, The Continuum has learned.

* Look for a promotion tie-in from Mercedes Benz.

* Gambit is not in the film.

Okay, this is my first giveaway on Superhero Sightings. Here are the details. Currently, up for grabs is a loose Marvel Figure Factory Unmasked Spider-man chase figure. This is one of the blind boxed mystery figures that show up in each case. It has been opened and put together, but all the pieces are included. I e-mailed Toy Biz customer support regarding the missing piece for the Apocalypse build-a-figure. Here is the response I got (emphasis mine.)

Needless to say this is a disappointment, but at least they are doing something about it. If you don't know what I am talking about, this is the left arm of Apocalypse that comes with the Maestro figure in Marvel Legends series 12. It is missing the plastic tube that connects the arm to the back.

A "Fantastic Four" Follow-Up

Fox has green-lighted a sequel to Fantastic Four that is scheduled to be released on July 4, 2007. Fox is bringing back director Tim Story, but Julian McMahon, who played Dr. Doom, will not be back. If all goes well with the script, Story expects to roll cameras on Fantastic Four 2 early next year. It's biggest competition will be Spider-man 3 which is scheduled to open in May 2007. 100TH POST!!!: Fantastic Four DVD Arrives Tuesday

First of all I would like to say that I can't believe that it has been four months and that this is my 100th post on Superhero Sightings. If I have any regular readers out there, I would like to say thanks. I plan to keep on doing this whether anyone reads or not because I enjoy it, but I would love to have people read this and find it useful. I just completed the new design and plan on promoting this blog and attracting more readers. So stay tuned because interesting things are in the works! Now, onto the news.

New Spiderman Classic Figures Are Out

Spider-man Classics series 16 have been found in the US. You can review the thread, Toy News International Forums -> New Spiderman Classic Figures Are Out, here. This is the series with Man-Wolf and Venom. It also includes two pretty slick looking new versions of Spidey himself. Reports I have read are saying that they are being found on the west and east coast.

X3 Movie Update

The first trailer for X3 will appear in front of King King, 20th Century Fox has confirmed for Comics Continuum. King Kong is scheduled to open in theaters on Wednesday, Dec. 14. The trailer will be unveiled online on www.apple.com tomorrow. There will also be an exclusive inside look at X-Men 3 included with the Fantastic Four DVD which will be released on Tuesday, Dec. 6th.

Marvel Minimates Make DVD Debut!

Diamond Select Toys and Art Asylum announced today a new Minimates box set will be available this Spring. The X-men Box Set will include, Darktide, a full-length mini-movie featuring computer-animated Minimates. Check out the "Marvel Minimate Make DVD Debut" article on Toy News International for more info and pictures. It appears this will only be sold at Target and specialty stores making it an exclusive. Minimates included are New X-Men Wolverine, Magneto, Juggernaut and New X-Men Cyclops with new facial expressions. Since I have all those figures, the only incentive for me to get it will be the movie. We will see if it will be worth it.

Marvel Legends 11 and 12 Found!
