Infinite Crisis Toys Revealed in ToyFare #100

By picking up ToyFare #100, you can read the latest on DC Direct's newest line based on the new Infinite Crisis series. Apparently, this line is being kept top secret, but ToyFare gives you some early shots of the figures plus a partial line up. Here is the line up so far as reported by ToyFare:
  • OMAC
  • Power Girl
  • Mongul
There are 5 figures in the series. According to ToyFare, the last 2 figures will be revealed in next month's issue, but they make an appearance on the last page of Infinite Crisis #1. If you have read this issue, you can guess who it is but I won't spoil it for you here. These figures are currently scheduled for an August 2006 release date. DC Direct says they are on schedule, but if you know anything about DC Direct, you know they have a habit of pushing back release dates when it comes to action figures.

DC Superheroes from Mattel

I've been waiting to post about these for some time. It looks like more information is starting to trickle out about them so I guess now is as good a time as any. DC Superheroes is DC's counterpart to Marvel Legends, mass market counterpart that is. Many collectors know that DC Direct's 6" comic based line is comparable but they aren't available at mass market and this usually means the price point can be twice as much. This is similar to Mattel's comic based Batman line a few years back, and also will feature sculpting by the legendary Four Horsemen. However, they will also come with a comic, feature characters from Batman and Superman and are supposed to be superarticulated. You can view some early pictures from DC Superheroes on TNI.

There was more pictures in the most recent ToyFare magazine of these figures. From those pictures, it does not look like they have articulation comparable to Marvel Legends. The articulation looks more like the Zipline Batman from the first series of Mattel's Batman figures. However, looking at the pictures from the link above, it looks like some of them will be pretty poseable. We will have to wait and see as these are scheduled to be released in January 2006. I will say that I like the packaging and the sculpting. I am generally not a fan of DC but I am a Superman fan and have a few DC figures. I will definitely check these out.

Here is the line up:

Wave 1:
  • Batman
  • Bane
  • Scarecrow
  • Killer Croc (with new head sculpt)
Wave 2:
  • Superman
  • Bizarro
  • Doomsday
  • Supergirl (Kara In-Ze - white shirt version)

ToyFare #100: Marvel Legends News!

ToyFare #100 hit news stands last Wednesday but mine came in the mail just yesterday. I waited until to today to report this news so here goes. There were 2 major Marvel Legends announcements in this issue. First, series 12 will have 4 variant figures. This is a first for the line. Here is a list:
  • Iron Fist (red costume, new head sculpt)
  • Astonishing X-Men Wolverine (maskless)
  • Bishop (bald)
  • Sasquatch (white)
Each of these figures will contain a piece to build an 18 inch Apocalypse figure. This is also a first as the previous build a figures were listed as being 16 inches tall. Accorsing to ToyFare, these will be released in January. That means series 11 should be released soon.

Also announced, was a new toy line to bear the Marvel Legends name, Masterworks. These are being described as, "3D dioramas inspired by classic Marvel comic book covers." They are unposeable and ranging from 6 to 9 and a half inches in size. Each will come with the comic that the diorama depicts. I'm not sure how these will do but Toy Biz recently announced a fan poll that many believe is in connection with this line. No announcement has been made on what purpose the poll will serve in the line.

Batman Begins DVD Out Today!

Batman Begins was released on DVD today. First, a couple of things you should know. There are 2 versions of the DVD, a single disc version and a 2 disc version. The single disc version contains no extras but is on sale for the low price of $14.99 at Best Buy and Circuit City. At Circuit City, they are giving away a free Batman Begins lithograph with purchase of the DVD. I got the 2 disc version which comes with a comic book and a second disc loaded with extras. I got it at Circuit City where it was on sale for $22.99. I was able to get the lithograph with it, and I think it makes a neat collectible for fans. It is certainly a good way to get shoppers to buy from you. I was told that the 2 disc version was on sale at Target for $19.99. I have not checked any others stores yet, so I can't tell you the pricing anywhere else. I imagine it will be on sale for the rest of the week, so get them while they last. I would also guess that the Circuit City lithographs will go fast as well.

New X-Men Animated Series in 2007

Although not officially announced apparently, Marvel is developing a new X-Men animated series for mid-2007. Production has already begun on 26 episodes for the series which is said will center around Wolverine. Read the whole article on

I think this could be very interesting if handled right. If they are making it for a younger audience, which is likely, it will be hard for them to give it the right treatment, meaning they will have to scale back on the violence. This in turn will make it hard to tell a good Wolverine story, so we will have to watch and see what happens.

DC Direct Announces Superman/Batman Series 2

You can find pictures and info on this on These are based on the artwork of Michael Turner. Figures in the series are Superman, Supergirl, Batman, Darkseid and Corrupted Supergirl. These are scheduled to be released next summer, on June 21, 2006.

My opinion on these based on the pictures is that Michael Tuner's artwork, although incredible on paper, does not translate well to 3D. I thought the same of the designs of the Identity Crisis figures which are also based on his artwork. I am always interested in Superman though. I will have to see them before I make up my mind.

Newsarama: Inifinite Crisis

This is for anyone reading or interested in checking out the current DC book Infinite Crisis. Newsarama has posted a couple of articles in relation to the points revealed in the new series.

First, Crisis Recovery: An Annotated Guide to #1 is a page by page review/discussion of the first issue of Infinite Crisis. If current DC continuity is alien to you because you haven't read all the mini-series following Identity Crisis, then this article is for you as it attempts to explain most of what is going on. But be warned, you should read the book first or it will be spoiled.

Second, Who Was That Caped Man? is a great article that details the history of DC's characters and origins and the resulting continuity problems and complications. I think this article is for anyone that reads DC comics, as it explains in detail the events that led up to Crisis on Infinite Earths in the mid-Eighties and the events leading up to the current continuity. This article also contains spoilers if you have not read Infinite Crisis #1.

The Batman Riddler review by Michael Crawford

From Michael Crawford:
"I haven't found the new The Batman wave in brick and mortar stores yet, but some online stores have started shipping them, and I snagged Riddler before the first shipments disappeared. He's not bad, but he's not the best of the line so far by any means. A wobbly neck joint and disappointing articulation hurt him, but that probably won't be a big surprise to anyone."

Marvel Movies Update

Comics Continuum reports that David Hayter, who is writing and directing the Black Widow movie for Marvel and Lions Gate, told The Continuum there is progress on the film.

"I kust submitted the final draft of the script, and it has been received very postively," Hayter told The Continuum. "We are supposed to sit down and discuss casting this week."

Hayter has a long association with Marvel, having worked on X-Men and X2, and, more recently, Iron Man.

In other Marvel movie news:

* Jessica Biel, who played Abigail Whistler in Blade: Trinity, was named "The Sexiest Woman Alive" by Esquire magazine, which unveiled Biel's cover last week in New York City. Blade: Trinity debuts this month and runs into next month on Starz.

* The first trailer for X3 is a ways off yet. "Nothing is ready that I am aware of," producer Ralph Winter told The Continuum. "I have not seen anything yet."

* 20th Century Fox has revealed the box art for the VHS version of Fantastic Four, which like the DVD and UMD versions, will be released on Dec. 6. Click on the thumbnail for a larger image.

More interestingly, they have series 13 posted using the line up that popped online last weekend. This the same line up that Jesse Falcon is pissed off at for being leaked and uses the same artwork. They even show the pack in henchmen that Jesse says are no longer going to be included. To their credit, they have dropped Crimson Dynamo, which according to Jesse was not in the line up. Head on over to Sony's site for Spider-man 3 to check out the villian's gallery there. We're not going to spoil your fun but here are some of the candidates." The list of possibilities are all shown with comic-book art and character profiles, which include: Carnage, Chameleon, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Green Goblin, Hobgoblin, Hydro-Man, Kraven the Hunter, Jackal, Lizard, Mysterio, Rhino, Sandman, Scorpion, Venom, and Vulture. One cool feature is that each villian's bio has which comic book they first appeared in. There is no official announcement about which villians will be in the movie yet, but you can read my post from last week and see what Kirsten Dunst said about the movie's villians.

Marvel Legends Series 13: Update

I posted this info on Marvel Legends 12 and 13 over the weekend. Now, I knew that it was not official, but it would seem that Jesse Falcon from Toy Biz has discounted this info. Jesse Falcon is one of the managers at Toy Biz who has a lot to do with the Marvel Legends product line. You can read what he posted here. Here is the gist of it:
  • He is really pissed that this info was leaked. One of the reasons is that it is old and no longer accurate.
  • He says proof that the information is inaccurate is that Crimson Dynamo is no longer part of the line up.
  • He also says that series 13 will not have the pack in villian henchmen, the reason being that it was not cost efficient. According to what he says, 13 will have a different pack in that everyone will love even more.
  • He indicates that he is trying to get the henchmen made in some way, but wouldn't say what it is and that he has to convince the higher ups at the company first.
You should note that most people accept that this is "the" Jesse Falcon and that what he says is truthful, but there isn't any actual proof. I thought he was very rude and unprofessional in his post, even though he has a right to be pissed and is obviously being sarcastic at some points. It's obvious that he is just as much a fan as we are though, and he is really trying to make the line cool for the fans. He said at one point the pack in henchmen were going to be 5" tall and have 3 points of articulation, but is glad they didn't do it because that would have sucked. I agree and am glad they didn't do it that way either. I guess we'll have to wait for Toy Fair to find out unless somebody else leaks something again.

Toy Biz Marvel Legends Poll

There is a poll up on for Marvel Legends. Toy Biz is aksing two questions:
  1. What's the greatest Marvel comic cover of all time?
  2. What's the most amazing fight scene in our 60-year history?
The results, "will be used in all new Marvel Legends product line." You can vote until October 5. From the nominations they will select 32 covers along with 32 fight scenes and pit them against each other in a grueling series of polls to determine the winners! This will be interesting to say the least. It could be cool if it involves Marvel Legends but the two latest new Marvel lines, Superhero Showdown and Figure Factory, weren't very interesting to me. Remember, that Marvel owns Toy Biz, so any Toy Biz details coming from Marvel is the real deal.

Included are:

  • Venom
  • Kraven
  • Punisher
  • Buzzing Beetle (repaint)
